City of Moreton Bay respectfully acknowledges the Kabi Kabi, Jinibara and Turrbal Traditional Custodians of the lands across the City, and pays our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

In 2023, Council adopted its inaugural Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), marking an important step in Council’s long-term reconciliation journey.

Mayor Peter Flannery said National Reconciliation Week presents an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on our ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

“City of Moreton Bay resonates deeply with the 2026 National Reconciliation Week theme of “All In”.

“As a Council, we’re all in. We agree that reconciliation requires a collective effort, and we are committed to building better relationships with First Nations communities,” he said.

As part of the inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan, Council updated its Procurement Framework to include a new provision recognising First Nations suppliers operating on Traditional Custodian land of the Kabi Kabi, Jinibara and Turrbal as ‘local suppliers’ even when operating outside of City of Moreton Bay local government area boundaries.

“This change significantly improved opportunities for First Nations businesses to compete for Council contracts. Additionally, Council also reduced payment terms from 30 to 14 days for eligible suppliers,” Mayor Flannery said.

Council’s 2025–2028 Economic Strategy Action Plan also includes First Nations business advancement actions, including supporting procurement growth, strengthening employment pathways and developing culturally-led economic development programs.

Additionally, Council recognises the importance of building the knowledge and capability of our teams in order to build better relationships with First Nations communities.

In 2025, City of Moreton Bay established a Staff RAP Alliance Network to raise awareness of reconciliation across the organisation. The inaugural network has staff from across the organisation who have been involved in cultural learning workshops and cultural immersion events within the community.

As we continue on our reconciliation journey, Council will appoint Councillor Tony Latter (Division 12) to oversee the continued implementation of our Reconciliation Action Plan, as we prepare to submit results and work towards embedding a new Plan.
