Works on a visionary project designed to transform and activate public land at Petrie will soon get underway after City of Moreton Bay awarded a contract for civil works.

The Lakes Precinct Activation at Moreton Bay Central (formerly known as The Mill), aims to enhance environmental and community spaces by building a series of high-quality waterside spaces, walking trails and destinations along the edges of the lakes.

The new space will provide an enviable green space for visitors when they attend the neighbouring Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Construction works for the project include:

  • A proposed car park for 74 vehicles for visitors to the Lakes Precinct and the existing adjacent Mill Waterpark.
  • Open space areas with picnic shelters (including a solar BBQ) and high-quality landscape spaces.
  • A new lakefront 3km concrete paved walking track and;
  • Wayfinding signages and interpretative signages of site history, local fauna and flora.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said awarding of the tender for delivery of civil and landscape construction works was a positive step forward for the project.

“Council is thrilled to progress the Lakes Precinct, which will provide a world class green space for both residents and visitors to enjoy,” he said.

Councillor Jim Moloney (Div 8) said construction of the project will enrich both environmental and community spaces, offering high-quality waterside areas, picnic shelters, and landscape zones that encourage social interaction and relaxation.

“This space will provide an inclusive environment for families, friends, and community groups to gather and connect, while exploring the Old Mill site,” Cr Moloney said.

The project is one of five under the $45.53 million SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund, an initiative that sees City of Moreton Bay along with the State and Federal Governments evenly co-contribute to the delivery of the shovel-ready projects to support local jobs, and deliver a more connected and liveable city that will provide a legacy for future generations.

“Our City plays an important role in the future prosperity, not only of South East Queensland, but the entire state as we work to retain our liveability and affordability in the face of rapid population growth,” Mayor Flannery said.

“While this growth is Council’s single greatest challenge, this funding demonstrates that when all levels of government work together, we can maintain and enrich the lifestyles of our current and future population.

“The project underscores our commitment to delivering a city of tomorrow that ensures residents can live, work and play in Moreton Bay.”

Construction on the project is expected to start October 2025 with completion expected in mid 2026.
