Accessible beaches

City of Moreton Bay’s coastline hosts many beautiful beaches. For people with limited mobility, a day at the beach may not be possible.

Our accessible beaches initiative allows everyone to enjoy a day in the sun, sand and surf.

Under the initiative, we provide beach wheelchairs and beach matting at two patrolled beaches.

Beach matting helps people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking frames, seniors, and people pushing prams or beach carts get to and from the beach.

Beach wheelchairs have large wheels, providing easy navigation across sand and rocks. You can take the Sandcruiser® into shallow water or enjoy a swim using the Mobi-Chair®.

Woorim Beach

Beach mat

A permanent beach mat (Mobi-Mat®) is installed at access point 12 off Bluey Piva Park. It sits between the dunes and does not extend to the water’s edge. This makes the beach easier to access and provides a viewing point on the beach, while protecting the mats from damage by high tides.

A continuous pathway connects the accessible parking within the car park off North Street to Access point 12. The beach mat is provided in partnership with Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club. For more information, read the product leaflet.

Booking and collecting beach mobility equipment

Council is currently working to make self-service lockers with free hireable beach equipment available to the public. Due to equipment upgrades, Council is unable to take any new beach wheelchair bookings until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Suttons Beach

Beach mat

A permanently installed beach mat (Mobi-Mat®) is available on Suttons Beach near the Rotunda. It is next to the seawall, but away from the water's edge. This provides a place for people to rest on the beach while ensuring the mat is less likely to be damaged by high tides. For more information, view the product leaflet.

Availability of matting is subject to beach and weather conditions.

Report an issue

Council regularly maintains the beach matting. Due to the coastal environment, they can be impacted by strong winds and weather events, such as sand covering the mats. During severe weather events, the mats may be shortened or temporarily removed.
