City of Moreton Bay is going for gold after awarding a tender to begin earthworks and remediation works for its new Olympic venue and Stage 2 of The Mill Central precinct.
The site, located within Council’s Priority Development Area at The Mill at Moreton Bay, will host 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games events at a new purpose-built indoor sports centre with a 10,000-seat capacity.
Mayor Peter Flannery said this was an exciting project milestone that will set the groundwork for the construction of one of the first purpose-built venues for 2032.
“This will enliven the entire precinct and lay the groundwork for future growth investment in the site.
“The Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic 2032 Games in particular, are an exciting opportunity for City of Moreton Bay to be part of Olympic folklore, and our new Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will further enliven this precinct at Petrie.
“The venue itself is designed to have multipurpose uses and lasting legacy benefits for the community before and long after the Olympics and Paralympics.
“It will also feature as the centre-piece of Stage 2 of Mill Central, an innovative and lively new precinct in our City.
“The works we’ve approved lay the foundation and groundwork for the site’s future and opens up new investment opportunities across the precinct.
“This contract delivers enabling infrastructure to allow for the construction of new roads and associated services that will expand the site.
“It will provide connection to Dohles Rocks Road in the north, creating a second entrance to the site.
“Works will begin by June this year and are due for completion by mid-2026.
“This will allow the next phase of development to take shape well ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Councillor Jim Moloney (Div 8) said the new work builds on the hugely successful Stage 1 university precinct.
“At the time, our university campus development at The Mill was something no other council in Australia was doing, and now just a few years on, it’s going from strength to strength,” he said.
“Stage 1 of The Mill also features the award-winning The Mill Waterpark and Play Space and works will soon get underway on a $5.5 million Lakes Precinct Activation as part of the SEQ City Deal.
“We want Stage 2 to be delivered to same gold standard and these groundworks set us on the right path to achieving something truly special for City of Moreton Bay.
“The vision is to create a vibrant new precinct that could attract economic and residential development, community spaces, social and public amenities and more.
A haulage plan will be developed to ensure there are no disruptions to the current access during construction.
