  • City of Moreton Bay has unleashed dog registration data on International Dog Day that reveals the Border Collie is the City’s most popular breed
  • The data from the 66,844 dogs currently registered has also uncovered the City’s top dog names, with Bella coming in at number one
  • Mayor Peter Flannery, a proud Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund owner, is urging the City’s residents, new and old, to ensure their dogs are registered to ensure a quick reunion if their pet is ever lost

It’s ‘paw-fficial’ – the Border Collie is top dog in the City of Moreton Bay.

Council data released on International Dog Day has revealed the top 10 breeds registered in the City, with the Border Collie coming in at number one with 4674 registrations.

Moreton Bay residents are also barking mad for the Labrador Retriever, Maltese and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with each breed having in excess of 4000 registrations.

The Australian Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dog, German Shepherd, Jack Russel Terrier, Cavoodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel rounded out the top 10 dog breeds.

Dog registration data has also uncovered that Bella, Charlie, Luna, Molly, Ruby, Buddy, Daisy, Coco, Max and Rosie are the names that lead the pack in the City.

There are 66,844 dogs currently registered – and that figure is steadily increasing as the City welcomes an average of 240 new residents each week.

Mayor and proud canine owner Peter Flannery is urging residents, new and old, to ‘paws’ this International Dog Day (August 26) and ensure their dogs are registered with Council.

“Dog registration helps Council quickly reunite you with your pet if they ever get lost and also supports our responsible pet ownership programs,” he said.

“Both dog and cat registration renewals are currently being sent out and are due on 30 September, so we are reminding residents to ensure their pet’s details are up to scratch.

“Every lost pet deserves to come home and registration is what helps make this happen.”

While happy for Council to unleash the dog registration data, Mayor Flannery was ‘paw-ndering’ why his breed of choice - the Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund – just missed out on making the City’s top 10 breeds.

“I love my Miniature Dachshunds - they are playful, affectionate and loyal. The breed tends to make most of the top 10 dog breed lists in Australia, but in our City they are the 12th most popular,” he said.

“But I’m sticking to the paw-sitives and encouraging residents to celebrate their canines this International Dog Day, which is all about promoting responsible ownership including registration, proper care, training and affection while appreciating the impact dogs have on our lives.”

All dogs and cats must be registered by 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of being brought into City of Moreton Bay, per the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Animal Management Local Law 2023.
