Statement in relation to recent severe storm
Published 25 November 2025
On the afternoon of Monday 24 November, areas within City of Moreton Bay were heavily impacted by a very dangerous thunderstorm with large giant hailstones, damaging locally destructive winds and heavy rainfall.
Significant damage continues to be reported, with a large number of powerlines down and more than 600 SES requests for assistance.
Worst hits areas in City of Moreton Bay included Bribie Island, Narangba, Burpengary, Morayfield, Griffin and Caboolture with hailstones of 11cm diameter observed at Ferny Hills around 3.30pm yesterday.
Damage to power infrastructure is significantly higher than other areas in SEQ. Council is working closely with agencies to address the network outages.
As at 11.30am this morning, more than 49,000 customers were reported with power out across the City and there were more than 400 active SES jobs.
There are currently 19 confirmed Council road closures and 7 confirmed TMR closures due to the storm.
Mayor Peter Flannery said public and staff safety was Council’s focus right now.
“Roads and pathways may be dangerous so be aware.
“Council’s crews are out again this morning inspecting and clearing fallen trees and we are prioritising resources to respond to this work.
“Please be patient with our crews and the Emergency Services who are working hard to ensure the safety of the community.
“I myself am still impacted so I know just how difficult it can be without power and managing clean up after storms as severe as we saw yesterday.
“It’s been rewarding however to see the strong community spirit with neighbours helping each other and our staff, SES and Energex working extremely hard to clean up debris and bring the community back to business as usual.”
There is a risk of further thunderstorms this evening, however these are currently not expected to be at the same level of severity as yesterday.
There are currently no Disaster Recovery Arrangements in place.
