Support building for new Youngs Crossing bridge
Published 23 December 2025
The much-anticipated upgrade of Youngs Crossing has marked a major construction milestone with the first set of bridge pier piles now in place and ready to support the future needs of road users through this part of the City.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the four 4-metre high piers adjacent to Sideling Creek were the first of 32 to be installed over the next five months for Young Crossing’s new flood-resilient bridge.
“After months and months of preparatory works, the project is starting to take shape above ground level,” Mayor Flannery said.
“This new bridge is the gamechanger when it comes to overcoming the flooding issues that have plagued this part of our City’s road network for generations.
“These piles signal to the community a significant improvement – delivering better connectivity and travel experiences - is around the corner for the thousands of locals and businesses that rely on this road link every week.”
The Youngs Crossing upgrade is one of the biggest road infrastructure projects to be delivered by Council and crucial to transport services within our City. The project spans more than one kilometre from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road, including a new bridge approximately 200 metres long.
Youngs Crossing Road is used by more than 20,000 vehicles a day and since 2021 it’s been closed due to flooding for an average of 12 days a year. This year alone the road has been forced to close on 10 occasions.
The upgrade has a funding contribution of $51.6 million from the Australian Government. The Queensland Government is contributing a further $15 million to upgrade the Youngs Crossing Road and Dayboro Road intersection.
Division 8 Councillor Jim Moloney said the project team appreciated the community’s understanding and cooperation throughout 2025 as crews worked towards delivering this city-shaping piece of infrastructure.
“Onsite construction activities have temporarily ceased from Friday 19 December for a much warranted break across the holiday period,” he said.
“Crews will be back in earnest on January 5 to get on with the job of delivering this essential upgrade by late 2027.”
