On the eve of National Homelessness Week, City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery has invited the State Government to launch a trial initiative of the Home Find program, in partnership with City of Moreton Bay and Encircle.

“Home Find is designed to provide transitional housing, where a number of individuals can live together, with appropriate wrap around services and support,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This is yet another proactive solution we’re committed to activating, that will help people find a safe and secure place to call home.

“With Encircle reporting that 40% of locals experiencing homelessness are women, this pilot will have an initial focus on supporting women experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

“Homelessness is a complex problem for communities all around Australia and internationally. City of Moreton Bay is no different.

“Council continues to advocate strongly for, and is committed to, actively working toward an end to homelessness.

“Everyone deserves to have a safe and secure roof over their head.

“Since 2021, City of Moreton Bay has proactively pulled the levers at our disposal including providing Council land to community housing providers, and the waiving of infrastructure charges to support the delivery of more affordable and social housing.

“These two measures are set to deliver about 300 new permanent social and permanent dwellings in our city.

“This is off the back of the opening of our Peninsula Support Hub on Monday, home to The Breakfast Club and The Salvation Army, offering case management, housing referrals, meal services, laundry and shower facilities, and social connection in a welcoming and respectful space.

“First announced in 2021, this first of its kind in Queensland, was custom built for the tenants, with Council providing the land and investing $3.7 million into this facility with a further investment of $3 million from the State Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program (SEQCSP).

“An end to homelessness is a non-negotiable goal for Council and we are actively working with frontline services, housing providers, community groups and all levels of government to deliver immediate and practical support to achieve this goal.

“We all agree on one thing - there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to address housing insecurity in our community.

“We acknowledge there is more to be done to ensure all members of our communities have a safe and secure roof over their head, and we will continue to put forward practical solutions to the Government to alleviate this housing crisis.

“We thank the State Government for recognising the pressing need in City of Moreton Bay and urge them to continue to support local partnerships and innovative approaches like Home Find to deliver real outcomes for those in need.”
