  • City of Moreton Bay has granted the Peninsula Padres Baseball Club a 10-year peppercorn lease over an area at Talobilla Park
  • The low-cost tenure agreement incorporates new temporary storage and meeting facilities required by the organisation, which has established itself as Australia’s largest baseball club with more than 400 players

City of Moreton Bay is stepping up to the plate to support the local baseball community, with the granting of a peppercorn lease for the Peninsula Padres.

The lease will support the baseball club’s operations at Talobilla Park while a new district level clubhouse is built at the venue.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the $1 per annum, 10-year peppercorn lease would enable the Peninsula Padres Baseball Club to keep operating from their current home base at Talobilla Park in Kippa-Ring.

“Council is proud to support the Peninsula Padres by granting a long-term, low-cost lease to ensure they can remain at Talobilla Park,” he said.

“I’m pleased we had been able to relocate a large demountable building from the Petrie Depot to Talobilla Park, while the club secured funding to start construction on a sizeable storage shed.

“Our support for community sports clubs like the Peninsula Padres ensures they can continue to grow, providing opportunities for more of the Moreton Bay community to be healthy and active.

“For many years, the club has promoted and delivered baseball in Redcliffe and surrounding areas and has established itself as the largest baseball club in Australia.

“The club’s growing popularity is what led Council to provide a temporary storage and meeting space at Talobilla Park while a new clubhouse is built.”

The new facilities, due to be completed within the next month, have been incorporated into a new tenure agreement.

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Division 5) said these facilities and the community lease would help the much-valued local club.

“We are proud to provide this support to the Peninsula Padres Baseball Club, which has been a key part of our sporting community for decades,” Cr Ruck said.

“The club has occupied parts of Talobilla Park since 2003, so it’s great to have them stay for next to no lease costs for at least the next 10 years.”

Peninsula Padres President Lee Gaskell said the temporary facilities and new community lease would help the club reach its full potential.

“With more than 400 players, ranging from age four to 67 years, we want to ensure we have the best facilities possible for them to train and compete,” Mr Gaskell said.

“The new temporary facilities will provide much-needed space for umpire changing facilities and deliver a bigger canteen, which will help us generate more funds to reinvest in our club.

“We thank Council for facilitating a temporary space to cater for our growing club and for endorsing a community lease, which is vital in ensuring we can continue to operate at a low cost.”

Another new innings for the City’s baseball and softball communities will begin when Talobilla Park’s new clubhouse is complete.
