- Proposal for a Major Planning Scheme Amendment No.4 – Morayfield South Emerging Community Area and Designated Bushfire Prone Areas, opens for community engagement between 13 October and 7 November.
- The amendment will increase bushfire resilience by applying building standards within Bushfire Prone Areas across the City.
- It will also support future growth in Morayfield South by identifying land uses and location of infrastructure through a Draft Morayfield South Structure Plan.
City of Moreton Bay continues to actively manage exposure to bushfire, and increase local resilience, by the application of building standards within Bushfire Prone Areas across the City through proposed planning scheme amendments.
Residents can have their say on the proposed planning scheme amendment to improve bushfire resilience across the City, as well as clarity over planning outcomes for Morayfield South, when the Major Planning Scheme Amendment No.4 – Morayfield South Emerging Community Area and Designated Bushfire Prone Areas, opens for community engagement from 13 October.
The formal community engagement period to provide feedback concludes on 7 November.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the Major Planning Scheme Amendment No.4 includes a change to the applicable building requirements in Bushfire Prone Areas across the City, that will improve bushfire resilience in vulnerable communities.
“Currently under our planning scheme, only some zones require buildings in mapped Designated Bushfire Prone Areas to apply the National Construction Code to new builds,” Mayor Flannery said.
“We have simply adjusted this requirement so all new builds affected by bushfire hazard mapping will be subject to national standards, regardless of their zoning.
“This is a simple change that will greatly improve safety of all locals, and it helps build a more resilient city for everyone to enjoy.
“Considering the current heightened alert we are all experiencing when it comes to bushfire risk, it is important we continue to proactively plan for our City and open this up to consultation with the community.
Mayor Flannery said the amendment also builds on the current Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) in Morayfield South by introducing a draft structure plan to create a well-planned community.
“Morayfield South is a key piece of City of Moreton Bay’s growth puzzle to provide much-needed homes and housing diversity for locals,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Currently it’s our second largest growth front after Waraba, and we estimate it will create 9,800 new homes for 26,000 people over the coming years.
“The amendment provides certainty for residents and developers by setting a long-term direction for future growth in the area through an updated Draft Morayfield South Structure Plan.
“The updated draft structure plan identifies infrastructure and features to support growth, such as environmental corridors, new roads and road upgrades, locations for future state schools, community facilities and neighbourhood hubs, and locations for parks and recreation areas.”
Councillor Tony Latter (Division 12) encouraged residents to have their say on Major Planning Scheme Amendment No. 4 during the consultation period.
“It’s important that residents take the time to review the updated draft Morayfield South Structure Plan and share their feedback,” Cr Latter said.
“This is an opportunity for the community to help shape how the area grows and to make sure the final plan reflects local priorities and expectations.
“Once consultation closes, Council will carefully consider all submissions and make any necessary changes before the amendment is sent to the State Government for approval.”
