Innovation and entrepreneurship in Moreton Bay

Knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship is one of the 4 pillars of Our City's Economic Strategy 2020-2041. This strategy will drive a bigger, bolder, and brighter city and future for our residents.  

As part of this strategy, Council implements the Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Industry Plan 2024-2028. This plan details actions we will take to position our city as a top 10 innovation hub. They include: 

  • Promoting links between UniSC’s research capabilities and local industry to support new products and services. 
  • Fast-tracking technology adoption by establishing a mentor program. 
  • Providing specialist entrepreneurship training for at-risk youth. 
  • Developing a digital skills gap program. 
  • Building capacity and connection through supported speaker events and workshops. 
  • Proving support for Moreton Bay's innovation, entrepreneurship, and startup ecosystem. 
  • Connecting and referring angel and investor networks through export and trade skills development. 
  • Facilitating the development of affordable commercial spaces through investment and planning. 
  • Advocating for and supporting the establishment of an innovation hub at The Mill. 
  • Enhancing our city’s reputation as a desirable location for high-growth knowledge-based businesses. 
  • Establishing a talent repatriation program.  
  • Creating a framework to drive collaboration between Council and local businesses. 

Innovate Moreton Bay program 

Council has delivered the Innovate Moreton Bay program for more than 7 years. Since 2025, we have partnered with Creative HQ to continue delivery of the program. The program provides specialised services to foster the city's entrepreneurial spirit. It is led by a local Innovation Director and supported by Creative HQ’s Wellington-based expert team. The program aims to support start-ups and scale-ups in our city. It provides access to resources, enabling our city to prosper and building our capacity to compete successfully in global markets. 

These resources are for: 

  • early-stage technology companies at various levels of scale-up development 
  • established medium to large-scale local companies seeking specialist support 
  • local small to medium enterprises (SMEs) looking to develop and implement growth and innovation initiatives 
  • young entrepreneurs seeking the support of a dynamic ecosystem.  

Council collaborates with strategic partners to ensure the continued delivery of programs that support the city’s ecosystem.

Become a mentor

We are recruiting mentors all year round to help us deliver programs and initiatives. 

Mentors are: 

  • leaders in their field who want to give back to their community 
  • skilled experts who want to lend a hand to others 
  • imaginative and inspirational 
  • willing to help build a newcomer's confidence as they plunge into an exciting future. 

In return, you will benefit from: 

  • developing your own mentoring, communication and leadership skills
  • enhancing your cross-cultural competence by working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • improving your understanding of the issues and barriers experienced by newcomers in Moreton Bay
  • networking opportunities with other like-minded individuals and mentors.
