Deception Bay was one of the worst hit areas in last month’s floods, but the community will have plenty to celebrate on Wednesday 20 April with the opening of the brand new $4.2 million Community Hall.

Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway said Council would also host a free thank you lunch for flood-affected locals and community groups.

“But most importantly, we’re bringing the whole Council out for our General Meeting to speak directly with this community and hear firsthand what they’ll need moving forward,” she said.

“So please come down and say g’day at 8am for the official opening of this impressive new Community Hall, and stay to check out Council’s proceedings.

“This is part of our promise to make Council meetings more accessible by hosting them at community locations across Moreton Bay, as well as increase transparency in decision making.

“Deception Bay is getting back on its feet thanks to the resilience and community spirit of locals, after the destructive wet weather system that ripped through Moreton Bay only a few weeks ago.

“This was one of the first community’s I visited as a top priority the day after the storms passed.

“It’s a great opportunity for Council to engage with locals on a deeper level and invite them to see how it all works live in person, and we’ll put on a big thank you lunch afterward for flood-affected community members and groups.

“The day will start with an official opening ceremony of the amazing new Deception Bay Community Hall, which was built thanks to the Federal Government’s $2.5 million contribution.

“This new district level facility will help cater for that growing community demand for many more years to come and expand on the suite of amenities for the community and groups like Meals on Wheels, who’ll be catering on the day with their brand new kitchen and work space as the main lessee.

“A Welcome to Country will be performed by a Kabi Kabi elder Lyndon Davies, followed by a haka and Welcoming Ava Ceremony to celebrate the large Pacific Island population that reside here.

Deception Bay is the second instalment of the regional program providing locals the opportunity to be part of the council meeting and connect with councillors and senior staff.

“Residents will get a chance to discuss community topics and issues one-on-one with councillors and Council staff in a rare Community Meetings session, which has had an amazing response from the community and is now booked out.

“I can’t wait to see everyone down there in person so we can better serve the community we represent.”
