Have Your Say Renaming Part of Leslie Patrick Park Doug Campbell Place

Moreton Bay Regional Council is proposing to honour the late Doug Campbell, well known for his ceramic art and community work, by naming a section of Leslie Patrick Park in Arana Hills after him.

Mayor Peter Flannery said this was one small way for Council to repay its gratitude to a passionate community member and encouraged locals to have their say on the plan.

“Doug was a long-time local of the Hills District, raising a wonderful family here and leaving his mark on the local community before his passing in 2011,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Council thinks it appropriate to rename part of Leslie Patrick Park after him, since he created many of the ceramic art installations that are there today.

“He volunteered as a community representative to Council for the Arana Hills CBD Streetscape Committee, he held numerous positions on the Arana Hills Progress Association, and was a member of the 'Friends of the Library Group' that had significant input on the Arana Hills Library.”

The specific area to be named ‘Doug Campbell Place’ extends roughly 75 metres along Dawson Parade, encompassing the Hills District Town Green area, opposite Patricks Road, Arana Hills.

Cr Matt Constance (Div 10) said he hoped locals would see the merit of this proposal and support the name change.

“So I think it’s a fitting tribute to rename part of Leslie Patrick Park in his honour and I will wholeheartedly be supporting this proposal,” Cr Constance said.

“Even if you didn’t know Doug personally, if you live in the Arana Hills area then you will have indirectly benefited from his generous community service in some way.

“With support of Council, Doug facilitated numerous art studio sessions with local schools, which culminated in work created by local students being installed in Leslie Patrick Park between 2002 and 2007.

“During his participation in the local streetscape Committee, Doug also influenced the distinctive form of the arbour structure in the forecourt of the park as well as the pavement inlays and pillar art panels.

“He not only helped with the ideation, creation, and implementation of a number of works within the park and Hills District Community Centre but around the Hills district more generally, including at Arana Hills Library.

“Doug was a passionate champion for community initiatives and was a member of the 'Friends of the Library Group' which campaigned for a higher standard of service and landscaping during construction of the new Council facility.

“He provided voluntary tuition in various art media including drawing, clay, ceramics, lino print and poetry. He fired works in his private kiln resulting in permanent works in the public realm. Doug also collaborated with Council and local commercial artists whose work is still located within the park today.

“Doug left a last legacy, with many young students, now local parents, being taught how to creatively contribute to their community. This naming ensures his legacy is honoured.”

Council’s policy allows for a ‘Place’ to be named within a park. Effectively the park name remains the same, Leslie Patrick Park, but an area within the park will now be known as Doug Campbell Place.

The proposed name change will now go out for public advertising and feedback over a 28-day period. The matter will only return to the Council Chamber for consideration if there are non-supportive submissions through this consultation period.
