City of Moreton Bay is one step closer to securing the economic future of the Narangba Innovation Precinct and hundreds of local jobs, while putting health and safety protections in place for nearby environmental land and residential properties.
Council has submitted its proposed Planning Scheme Amendment - Major Amendment No.5 – Narangba Innovation Precinct (East) Temporary Local Planning Instrument Response to the Queensland Government for review.
Mayor Peter Flannery said this comes after the Queensland Government provided feedback through an Early Confirmation of State Interests from the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.
“We know that City of Moreton Bay needs to activate more industrial land to supply our growing population with a variety of local jobs and to support our burgeoning local economy,” he said.
“The existing Narangba Innovation Precinct on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway already supports more than 3,000 jobs, but most importantly, it has the unique opportunity to support more Special Industries jobs within a designated area within the precinct.
“If Council’s proposal is successful, it’s projected to create nearly 600 new Special Industries jobs and add a further $129 million to our economy, while creating investor confidence for the precinct.
“The site is perfectly located for these types of businesses, as it’s next to the Bruce Highway and it’s only a short trip to the Brisbane Airport or Port of Brisbane.
“Council has completed extensive environmental health and economic studies between 2020 and 2024, to ensure that supporting expansion of Special and High impact industries at this site is a viable option, and we also sought early feedback from the Queensland Government on our draft amendment.
“The State provided minor recommendations that have been addressed in the current proposed amendment, which we have submitted to the Queensland Government for their State Interest Review.”
Councillor Sandra Ruck (Division 5) said residents and businesses would have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed planning scheme amendment if the Queensland Government approved.
“An important part of any proposed planning scheme amendment is the opportunity for the community to have their input on what is proposed,” she said.
“We’ll now wait for completion of the State Interest Review, and if approved there will be a formal consultation process shortly afterwards for residents and businesses to have their say.”
City of Moreton Bay will keep residents updated on this process through the Your Say Moreton Bay webpage, where residents can sign up for future notifications for the project.
