  • City of Moreton Bay officially adopts an operational roadmap to net zero by 2039 for Council operations
  • Council also adopts commitments aimed at reducing community emissions
  • City of Moreton Bay remains focused on taking practical steps for a better tomorrow and a low emissions future

“We are taking action focused on creating a better tomorrow through the decisions we make today," Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“We’re looking towards a sustainable and low emissions future and have committed to reaching net zero by 2039 across all our functions.

“We will be taking measured and practical steps that make sense for our growing city based on our own targets that are science based.  These plans will also help us deliver efficiencies across our operations and support lower emissions in our community.”

Council’s commitments are based on science with the pathway to net zero informed by technical specialists’ input and peer review, best practice examples, Council’s annual emissions inventories, in-house modelling, and the operational practitioners who have roles in reducing emissions across Council.

Council has several actions planned to achieve its net zero target including improving the energy efficiency of buildings, prioritising renewable energy projects and reducing organics going into landfill.

It has also committed to a number of actions to support the community to lower emissions including waste education to encourage a greater diversion of materials from landfill, an active transport network to encourage walking and cycling, and education forums providing tips for low carbon living.

“We’re serious about protecting our environment. Together, we can all help reduce our carbon emissions and make a safer, greener and more resilient City of Moreton Bay,” Mayor Flannery said.

The plans were adopted by Council on 24 September 2025, and both the Our Roadmap to Net Zero and City of Moreton Bay Community Emissions Reduction Commitments documents are available to view online
