Garden Organics marks successful milestone with 1.8 million collection

City of Moreton Bay is celebrating a major sustainability milestone, marking one year since the launch of the Garden Organics (GO) kerbside collection service and what a year it’s been.
Since rollout began in December 2024, the GO service has rapidly grown into one of Council’s most successful environmental initiatives. More than 125,000 households have now embraced the GO bin, with more than 1.8 million collections in the first 12 months alone.
In that time, residents have helped divert an extraordinary 32,000 tonnes of organic material from landfill. That’s the weight of 21,000 cars, more than 1,000 humpback whales, or enough to fill 13 Olympic swimming pools. That’s organic matter that is now being turned into valuable compost instead of taking up space in landfill.
With around 10 new households joining daily, the service continues to grow as City of Moreton Bay strengthens its commitment to sustainability and responsible waste management.
One year on, Garden Organics is not just a waste service, it’s a shared achievement and a symbol of what the community can accomplish together as the region works towards a greener future.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the achievement reflects the power of community participation in creating a more sustainable future for the region.
“This milestone belongs to our community. Every household using a GO bin is helping City of Moreton Bay go green as we grow,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Diverting 32,000 tonnes of organic material from landfill in just one year is an extraordinary achievement and it’s only possible because our residents have embraced the service with enthusiasm.”
“I also want to recognise the outstanding effort across Council teams who planned, delivered and continually improved this service. Their collaboration has helped create real environmental impact, and we’re proud to see the community using GO to make a difference every day.”
