Have Your Say: Proposal to Name Part of Toorbul Foreshore Buckby Place

Published 28 June 2023

Proposed area Buckby Place

An area of the Toorbul foreshore is proposed to be named in honour of the Buckby family, pioneers of the area who bought property in Toorbul in 1929 and remain there today.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the application for naming was compelling, historically significant, and supported by Council officers.

“The Buckby family have been part of Toorbul for more than 100 years, they are synonymous with this area and have given so much to the local community” he said.

“In fact if you’ve seen a copy of the recently published book on the history of Toorbul, you’ll see an 18-month-old John Buckby on the cover with his father and grandfather standing on each side of a wooden boat on the foreshore in front of their property.

“He is currently founder and president of the Toorbul Community & District Association, which shows his family’s commitment to this area through the generations.”

The specific area to be named ‘Buckby Place’ extends roughly 150m along the Toorbul foreshore, from opposite 146 Esplanade to 155 Esplanade.

Cr Brooke Savige (Div 1) enthusiastically welcomed the proposal and encouraged the community to have their say during the 28-day feedback period.

“The Buckby Family have a pioneering history in Toorbul dating back to pre-World War 1,” she said.

“John Buckby is a wonderful and selfless contributor to the community. I want to thank and acknowledge him not only for his current role but also being a Committee Member (1984 to 1994) and President of the Toorbul Progress Association (2016 to June 2018) before founding the TCDA.

“He has been Toorbul’s Christmas Carols Santa for a number of years and recently received recognition for distinguished and meritorious service as a Justice of the Peace for over 40 years.

“He also has given over 30 years of his life to emergency medical and aviation rescue. John is an amazing organiser and someone who genuinely cares about the community and the people in it.

“Needless to say without John or the Buckby family, Toorbul would not be the magical place or community it is today.

“So I wholeheartedly support the naming of Buckby Place along the Toorbul Foreshore.”

Council’s policy allows for a ‘Place’ to be named within a park. Effectively the park name remains the same, Toorbul Esplanade (Foreshore) (North), but an area within the park will now be known as Buckby Place.

The proposed name change will now go out for public advertising and feedback over a 28 day period. The matter will only return to the Council Chamber for consideration if there are non-supportive submissions through this consultation period.
