City of Moreton Bay will pour more than $10,000 into helping local students achieve their dreams after voting to continue its life-changing Scholarship and Bursaries Program.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the Program had made a significant impact for students studying at UniSC’s Moreton Bay campus, with council investing more than $1.1 million since it first began six years ago.
“We recognise the cost-of-living pressures students face, which is why we’ve increased the bursary from $2,000 to $2,500 to help eligible residents studying at UniSC’s Moreton Bay campus, alongside our $8,000 scholarship to support school leavers preparing to begin their tertiary studies,” he said.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our scholarship and bursary recipients, who have gone on to excel in their studies and careers. More than 70% of graduating recipients are now contributing to our local workforce in vital fields like nursing, education, psychology and social work.
“The success of the Program proves that you really can live, work and play in the City of Moreton Bay.”
Mayor Flannery said Council was committed to supporting more opportunities for local residents to attend university and would continue to work with UniSC to boost local tertiary participation in the growing city.
UniSC Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Helen Bartlett, welcomed Council’s increased support of the Program and encouraged eligible students to apply.
“Council's generous scholarships and bursaries encourage UniSC students to view university as an attainable goal and supports them to reach their full potential,” she said.
“Students undertaking their studies at UniSC Moreton Bay campuses can use this opportunity to focus on their studies and building brighter futures for themselves and their community.
“The achievements of previous recipients show how much these scholarships and bursaries can genuinely change lives by easing the costs associated with study and placements.”
Since 2020, the Program has delivered 47 scholarships and 44 bursaries with 30 of those recipients having already graduated from UniSC.
35 recipients are the first in family to attend university.
70% of students studying at UniSC Moreton Bay are from the city with close to 90 programs now on offer at the campus.
Applications for the City of Moreton Bay Scholarship or Study Support Bursary open in September.
