We have a commitment to ‘go green as we grow’. Find out more about the ways we can plan to keep what makes our city beautiful, biodiverse and unique.
Moreton Bay to 'go green as we grow'
Imagine a city where the natural environment and wildlife live in harmony alongside a growing residential community.
Protecting our environment and sustainability are a part of our future city planning. We have committed to retain 75% of our city as rural and natural environment, with 25% for urban development.
As Moreton Bay grows, we need to plan to support our community, environment and lifestyle:
- Protecting our environment and green spaces is a key part of our future city planning.
- We have an opportunity to use existing urban areas better. We can also build communities in new ways, helping us 'go green as we grow'.
- We will retain 75% of our city as rural and natural environment and use the remaining 25% for urban development.
- We need to make sure neighbourhoods support sustainable living and respond to climate change and natural hazards.
- City of Moreton Bay is working towards Net Zero by 2039 for Council operations.
- New ideas will help us play our part in delivering an environmentally positive 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As part of planning for our future city, we will very shortly be seeking early input into a new planning scheme. The planning scheme is one of the tools we used to shape how land can be used in City of Moreton Bay.
Early consultation for the new planning scheme is now underway – share your views via the community survey that is open until 12 July 2026.
This is the first step of community consultation – there will be another opportunity to have your say as the new planning scheme progresses.

Our commitment
Good planning will ensure we can deliver what our city needs to thrive. We will do this while holding firm on our pledge to ‘go green as we grow’. We are determined to protect what makes our city beautiful, biodiverse and unique.
We have a chance to use existing urban land better. We can build communities in new ways to achieve our environmental goals. We can do this by ensuring our neighbourhoods, buildings and infrastructure support sustainable living and protect our environment and lifestyle. We also need to ensure we respond to climate change and natural hazards.
You’ve told us we need to reduce our operational carbon footprint. As a result, we have committed to a roadmap to Net Zero for our business operations by 2039. We also aim to divert 85% of waste from landfill and increase our recycling rate to 70% by 2040.

Our planning scheme is one of the tools we use to manage development, guide how land can be used and serviced. We’ll be developing a new Planning Scheme and want you to join us on the journey.
