What you can recycle at home

Your yellow-lid recycling bin accepts a range of common household items:

paper and cardboard
hard plastics
glass bottles and jars
aluminium cans and foil (rolled into a ball)
steel cans
empty aerosols.

You can also recycle your food scraps at home by composting and worm farming, while creating rich fertiliser for your garden.

Recycling tips

Correct recycling helps ensure valuable materials can be recovered and turned into new products. To recycle right:

place separate recycling bins in bathrooms and bedrooms (not just the kitchen)
place items loose in the recycling bin(don't place items in bags or boxes)
empty food and liquid from containers.
screw tops on milk bottles so they are also recycled with the bottle
separate lids from containers
never place soft plastics or compostable packaging in the recycling bin.
if you are unsure, always check the recycling labels on the items packaging.

What happens to your recycling

After your recycling is collected, it is taken to Council's recycling partner, Visy.

Materials are then sorted into different material streams, including:

paper
cardboard
plastics
glass
aluminium
steel

These materials are then processed and used to manufacture new products, reducing demand for virgin materials and keeping resources circulating within the economy.

Recycling with Visy

Council partners with Visy to support local manufacturing using recycled materials. Through Visy’s closed-loop recycling system, household recyclables are transformed into new packaging products. Recycling helps keep valuable resources in circulation and reduces landfill waste.

You can recycle more than 30 categories of materials at our waste facilities, helping keep valuable resources out of landfill.

What you can recycle

Some of the major categories accepted include:

batteries (household, rechargeable, vehicle)
green waste
aluminium and steel
whitegoods, car parts and gas bottles.
paper and cardboard
clothing and textiles
furniture and household goods.
electronics (televisions, mobile phones, computers, laptops, printers, monitors)
motor oil, paint, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

Not all waste facilities accept the same materials. Before you visit, check which items are accepted at your local facility.
