Why spreading kindness matters
Every day, thousands of Council team members support our community.
From libraries and parks to waste facilities and customer service centres, we provide hundreds of services across our city.
Behind every call, email, and interaction is a real person. Around 70% of Council team members live locally. They're our neighbours, friends, family members, and are part of your community.
Everyone can contribute to a safe environment by acting respectfully, communicating appropriately, managing expectations, and supporting a culture free from aggression, abuse, and harassment.
Sadly, 1 in 7 Council team members have experienced occupational violence and aggression, including verbal abuse, threats and physical aggression.
Kindness is our jam, and just like you choose what to eat for breakfast when you wake up, you can choose to spread kindness and respect.
Small actions matter
We welcome feedback, concerns, and tough conversations, but we ask that they are shared with respect and patience.
Often the smallest acts of kindness have the greatest impact. A simple interaction can create a ripple effect across our community.
How to spread kindness
Every interaction sets the tone. Here are simple ways to make a difference:
- Start with a friendly greeting. A simple hello or smile helps set a positive tone and goes a long way.
- Be patient. Delays and issues can happen, and respectful communication helps resolve them.
- Keep shared spaces welcoming. Libraries, parks, customer service centres and facilities are for everyone.
- Lead by example. Your behaviour influences those around you.

Abusive, threatening, intimidating, aggressive or harassing behaviour toward Council team members will not be tolerated. This action may result in service refusal and further action per Council’s Occupational violence and aggression charter(PDF, 658KB).
