Housing and communities

Calling Moreton Bay home

Good planning helps us create communities that are great places to live. This means they are safe, connected, environmentally sustainable, and offer a high quality of life for everyone.

To achieve this, we need a range of housing options to meet people’s needs at every stage of life. Housing should be located in areas well connected to transport, infrastructure, and services. This applies to both established neighbourhoods and new communities.

As Moreton Bay grows, we need to plan to support our community, environment and lifestyle:

  • Over the next 30 years, one million people, or so will call City of Moreton Bay home.
  • We need to provide a variety of housing options. These options should suit residents at every stage of life. They should range from small apartments to large rural homesteads.
  • Homes need to be in areas that are well-connected to transport, infrastructure and services.
  • We need to plan for housing development in a way that allows us to keep 75% of our city as rural and natural environment, with 25% for urban development
  • We need to achieve our environmental and lifestyle goals. To do this, we need to build more homes in established communities. These communities should be close to urban centres.
  • We need funding and policies to reduce harm from weather events and natural hazards.

Your voice matters

As part of planning for our future city, we are now seeking early input into a new planning scheme to replace the Moreton Bay Regional Council Planning Scheme 2016. The Planning Scheme is one of the tools we used to shape how land can be used in City of Moreton Bay.

Early consultation for the new planning scheme is now underway – share your views via the community survey that is open until 12 July 2026.

This is the first step of community consultation – there will be another opportunity to have your say as the new planning scheme progresses.

Housing for everyone

Queensland Government plans say we need to provide more than 5,000 new homes every year. This is to accommodate the 240 people who are moving here each week. Now is our chance to choose how we plan for this growth. Over the next 30 years, it could see our city become home to one million people.

Careful planning will be essential to build the homes we need. This approach allows us to keep 75% of our city as rural and natural environment, with 25% for urban development. To achieve our environmental and lifestyle goals, we need to build more homes in established communities close to urban centres.

There is a need for more diverse housing. This includes terraces, duplexes, townhouses, apartments and traditional family homes and rural homesteads.

As we plan for the future, we need to create a resilient city. This means ensuring we have the funding and policies in place to reduce harm from weather events and natural hazards.

Imagine a city where more people can live close to urban centres with a mix of housing types to choose from, including affordable options. And that same city also offers a diverse range of homes in coastal and hinterland communities.
