As a proud Plastic Free July Council Member, we are committed to supporting our community in reducing single-use plastic waste. Together, we can build lasting habits for a more sustainable future.

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to make simple changes that reduce plastic waste and create lasting habits. In 2025, an estimated 174 million people took part worldwide, helping to avoid 290 million kilograms of plastic waste. These results show that communities can achieve meaningful environmental outcomes. 

Join a free online workshop 

Learn practical ways to reduce plastic waste at home. Discover simple tips for shopping, storage and making everyday choices that use less plastic.

Take the Plastic Free Pledge

This year, make a pledge to refuse single-use plastic. 

Choose one single-use plastic item to avoid this July, such as single-use coffee cups and water bottles, and give it a go. 

By taking the pledge, you are: 

• taking a practical step to reduce waste 
• building habits that can last beyond July 
• joining millions of people taking action around the world. 

How Council supports Plastic Free July 

We are working to bring Plastic Free July to life across our community. This includes: 

• encouraging residents to reduce plastic waste
• supporting schools, businesses and community groups to get involved 
• promoting local initiatives and events 
• creating opportunities for our community to learn, share and inspire each other.  

Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for everyone to be part of the solution.  

Why take part?

Every small change can make a difference. By taking part in Plastic Free July, you can reduce waste, encourage sustainable habits and protect the environment.  

Reducing your reliance on single-use plastics can help decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill. This helps reduce pollution and protect our oceans and waterways.  

Did you know: 

• About 50% of all plastic produced is designed to be single-use. 
• Only 15.9% of all plastic packaging in Australia is recycled. 
• Plastic production is estimated to quadruple by 2050. 
• More than 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean each year (an estimated over 170 wheelie bins per minute). 
• Over 75% of rubbish removed from beaches is plastic. 
• Some plastics are estimated to take over 1,000 years to break down.
• 92% of consumers, producers, retailers and governments support action to reduce plastic waste.
