Your voice matters

We do regular community consultation on a wide variety of projects around City of Moreton Bay, including shaping how we plan for the needs of our future city.

Why does planning for growth matter?

We expect our population to double to one million over the next 30 years, or so. Currently, 240 people are already moving here every week. The Queensland Government has told us to deliver more than 5,000 new homes each year. This forms part of its broader plan for South East Queensland.

We now have the chance to plan for that growth in a way that shapes our city and benefits us all. Taking a holistic view of city planning is one way we can achieve this.

It helps Council decide how our City and its many communities will grow and change over time such as:

Where homes will be built and what they will look like
What infrastructure is needed and where, including roads, transport, utilities and digital connectivity.
How we can grow our economy to create jobs and opportunities for residents
Where jobs can be created and what types of businesses will be allowed in which locations
What types of services, recreation and entertainment options and where they should be
How can we do this, while protecting our natural environment, green spaces and the character that makes our City special.

With your help, we can redefine what a city looks like – ditching the traditional model of one central business district (CBD) and instead creating many connected urban centres. This is called a polycentric city.

Why do we think this is a better vision for our City?

We are fortunate to have many bustling centres like Caboolture, North Lakes, Redcliffe and Strathpine as well as a growing knowledge and business precinct at Moreton Bay Central (Petrie).

It makes sense to create stronger ties between these existing centres, spreading jobs across our communities and easing traffic congestion caused by workers commuting into a single CBD. Living and working close to home means a better quality of life for our residents with less time spent commuting and more time doing the things they enjoy. It also saves money and is better for the environment.

The polycentric city model keeps money in our City, as residents work and play close to home, and businesses thrive.

What areas are we looking at in planning for the future?

There are four key areas we need to focus on as we develop the plan for our city of tomorrow - transport and infrastructure, housing, the economy, and the environment. Great city planning means taking all the elements we need and bringing them together to create liveable, sustainable, connected and vibrant communities.

Why does this matter to you?

We are at the beginning of the journey towards creating a future city that works for everyone. We want you to help us chart a course that will ensure we reach our potential, enhance our lifestyle, provide a range of housing types and manage our growth while retaining 75% of our rural and natural environment.

We use several tools to help us create a blueprint for our future city, to set us up for the next 30 years and beyond.

These tools include frameworks such as:

Planning Schemes
Local Government Infrastructure Plans
Neighbourhood Planning projects
City of Tomorrow Advocacy Plan
Other City strategy documents.

Over the coming weeks, months and years, we will continue to ask for your input on these frameworks to guide our decision-making as our City grows and we seek to deliver the homes, jobs and lifestyle you deserve.
