Accessible beaches
City of Moreton Bay’s coastline hosts many beautiful beaches. For people with limited mobility, a day at the beach may not be possible.
Our accessible beaches initiative allows everyone to enjoy a day in the sun, sand and surf.
Under the initiative, we provide beach mobility equipment and beach matting at Woorim Beach and beach matting at Suttons Beach.
Beach matting helps people using mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walking frames, seniors, and people pushing prams or beach carts get to and from the beach.
The beach wheelchairs and beach walker have large wheels, providing easy navigation across the sand.
Woorim Beach
Beach mat
An accessible beach mat (Mobi-Mat) is permanently installed at Beach Access Point 12, which adjoins Bluey and Jean Piva Park. The mat is approximately 30 metres in length and is laid between the dunes. The mat improves beach access and provides a viewing point at the top of the beach. To keep the beach matting free from the interference posed by sand accretion and erosion, the mat does not extend down to the tidal zone (hard sand).
Free beach mobility equipment hire
If you or a person you care for has mobility limitations that restrict access to the beach, you can hire a beach wheelchair or beach wheely walker for use at Bluey and Jean Piva Park and the adjoining beach.
Before you book, read the relevant safety information, product manual and terms and conditions(PDF, 324KB).
Wheelchairs must be rinsed in fresh water after use. Currently, the only place to rinse them is inside the Changing Places facility. To access this facility you will need to bring your own Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK).
Locker 1 - Sandcruiser Beach Wheelchair
Kindly donated by Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club, the sandcruiser can be wheeled over sand, absorbing shocks for a smooth and comfortable ride along the beach. While the chair is not designed to float, it offers an excellent experience on the beach and in shallow waters.

Locker 2 - Mobi-Chair Beach Wheelchair
Kindly donated by CentaCare Moreton Bay, the Mobi-Chair is a beach wheelchair suitable for both land and water. It provides a seamless transition from pathways to the beach and surf. Once in the water, the arm rests allow the chair and its user to float.

Changing Places facility
Woorim Beach's amenities block includes a Changing Places facility. The ceiling hoist within this facility can be used to transfer people to and from a beach wheelchair, in addition to its primary function of transferring people with high-support needs between the facility’s shower, height-adjustable change table and peninsula toilet. To use the facility you must bring your own sling (with loop attachment) and Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK).
There are also accessible and ambulant toilets and showers in the same amenities building, however the beach wheelchairs will not fit into those facilities.

Suttons Beach
Beach mat
A permanently installed beach mat (Mobi-Mat®) is available on Suttons Beach near the Rotunda. It is next to the seawall, but away from the water's edge. This provides a place for people to rest on the beach while ensuring the mat is unlikely to be damaged by high tides.
Council continues to investigate providing beach mobility equipment at this location however, this service is not currently available at Suttons Beach.

Report an issue
Council regularly maintains the beach matting. Due to the coastal environment, they can be impacted by strong winds and weather events, such as sand covering the mats, beach steepness and erosion. During severe weather events, the mats may be shortened or temporarily removed.
