The Old Gympie Road corridor is a vital north-south arterial road that runs next to the Bruce Highway. Currently, about 20,000 vehicles use it per day. In the next few years, this number is expected to increase to 30,000 in the coming years.
The City plans to upgrade the corridor to futureproof against increased traffic and congestion while also improving safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Detailed design phase
In August 2024, Council awarded the contract to global engineering consultant Arup Australia to design the 4.7 kilometre stretch of Old Gympie Road between Boundary Road, Dakabin and Anzac Avenue, Kallangur.
The design will include significant upgrades to the road corridor to ensure it meets the needs of residents as the city grows.
As part of early design process, Arup have undertaken a review of the existing designs to identify opportunities of improving the road network and providing state of the art transport facilities for our community. The result of this initial review has identified potential opportunities for positive outcomes for this road corridor, including:
- Opportunity to review construction and design elements to provide more value for money
- Opportunity to retain some existing mature vegetation adjacent to the road
- Opportunity to provide an off-road separated cycle track to improve safety for active transport users
- Review of construction sequencing to reduce overall length of construction.
To benefit from these opportunities, a revised design is required which requires some additional time during the detailed design phase of the project. Detailed design will be completed in middle of 2026. This additional time is being used to ensure the final plan delivers the best possible outcome for our community and reduce the overall project construction timeframes.

Project benefits
The project aims to:
- improve safety for road users and pedestrians
- reduce travel times and improve traffic flow
- create better and safer active transport options
- greener infrastructure and improved drainage
- reduce the risk of flooding.
Project features
Key features include:
- road works to widen Old Gympie Road to two lanes in each direction (four lanes total)
- new traffic signals at 10 key intersections
- installing footpaths, off road active transport facilities and signalised pedestrian crossings throughout the corridor
- landscaping and tree planting along the median and verges
- improving street lighting along the corridor
- upgrading existing bus stops with new seating and shelters at some locations
- upgrading drainage and stormwater infrastructure along the corridor.
- upgrading Freshwater Creek crossing with a new bridge.
Project timing and staging
The detailed design includes the development of a construction staging strategy. The strategy will deliver works in progressive stages to minimise disruption to the community. The City will release the schedule on completion of the detailed design in mid-2026.
Completed works
The City completed some project works before engaging Arup Australia.
Viney Avenue to Highet Street
Earlier works which included the removal of trees and fence relocation have been completed.
Overhead and underground service relocations started in early October 2024. These works include:
- installing underground power conduits
- installing new service pillars and underground power connection from the pillar to the meter box inside some properties (pillars are the green cases
- where the electrical wires terminate connecting a house to the power network)
- connecting streetlights to the new underground power network
- relocating power poles.
These works have been delayed due to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and are expected to be completed by mid-2025, pending weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.

Community engagement and updates
As part of the revised detailed design, a layout plan is being developed which will go out to public consultation later 2025. Further details of the public consultation will be provided in the near future including exact dates and locations for the consultation. Council will utilise the public consultation to obtain valuable feedback from residents and stakeholders such that the design can be finalised and completed.
We aim to keep the community informed and will work closely with impacted residents and businesses during the project’s delivery. To stay up to date, subscribe to the Old Gympie Road newsletter.
