School sports events

The Council has several state-of-the-art sporting fields that cater to a variety of sports, including rugby league, softball, and cricket. They are available for schools to use for sporting events. This includes cross country, interschool sports, district sports, and term sports.

Schools wishing to use a Council sports field will need to apply for approval. Council regulates these activities to ensure they are carried out safely.

The criteria for submitting a school sports activity permit are:

  • less than 499 people
  • does not need vehicle access to the sports field
  • does not need access to Council’s electricity or water supply
  • no amusement devices
  • no traffic management or parking restrictions
  • uses permitted structures only:
    • up to 2 marquees, where each marquee does not exceed 3 metres by 6 metres in size
    • is weighted according to the manufacturer’s instructions
    • is not pegged or staked into the ground. 

If your activity does not meet the above criteria, you will need to submit an events application.

How to apply

Step 1.Choose a location

Choose from our sporting facilities or contact Council about using another location on (07) 3205 0555.

Step 2.Complete a risk management plan

Complete the risk management plan template(DOCX, 927KB).

Step 3.Take out public liability insurance

Submit evidence of a current public liability insurance policy to the value of $20,000,000 in the same name as the applicant with your application.

Ensure the location listed on your policy includes public land. This must be outlined either on your certificate of currency or the terms and conditions of your policy and provided to Council. If this is not listed, get written confirmation from your insurer.

Step 4.Complete the school sports activity spreadsheet

Complete the school sports activity spreadsheet(XLSX, 49KB). You will need to provide the following details:

  • activity dates, include multiple dates if needed
  • activity name
  • sports ground or field's location, include multiple locations if needed
  • start and end times
  • estimated attendees.

Step 6.Review the fees and charges

An application fee is payable at the time of submission per Council's fees and charges. Council will contact you for payment.

The first column is the type of fee, the second column advises the fee amount, and the third column explains the fee's purpose.

Fee type Amount  Details 
Application fee - Low impact 201206 Payable when an application for a Local Law approval for low impact activities is submitted.
Amendment application fee 201207 Payable when an application to change an existing approval is submitted.
Minor changes including trading name or contact details are free.
Transfer application fee 201208 Payable when an application to transfer an existing approval to another person or business is submitted.
Note: Not all approvals are eligible for transfer. Please check approval conditions before applying.

Charities and not-for-profit organisations are exempt from paying fees with evidence of eligibility.

Step 7.Complete an application

Download and complete sections 1 to 4 and 6 to 10 of the Wedding and School Sports Events Local Law Application(PDF, 308KB) and submit:

You need to submit your application and all supporting documentation at least 30 business days before the activity start date. Applications can be accepted up to 6 months in advance.

The applicant must be a legal entity. This includes an individual, company, incorporated body, unincorporated body, partnership, body corporate, or trustee.
