Dozens of Moreton Bay locals representing almost 50 nations will take the pledge to become the City’s newest Australians.

Joining one of the country’s fastest growing and most diverse cities, 450 people from countries such as Montenegro, Venezuela, Rwanda and Nepal, will officially be sworn in on Australia Day.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said he was thrilled they had all chosen City of Moreton Bay to call home.

“I would like to congratulate our City’s newest Australians and extend them a warm welcome into our national family,” he said.

“With one in five residents born overseas, representing at least 118 nationalities speaking more than 88 different languages, City of Moreton Bay is a true cultural melting pot.

“We are proud of our diverse roots that add to the rich tapestry of our vibrant community. With an enviable lifestyle that stretches from creek to coast, it’s no wonder more than 500,000 people now call Moreton Bay home.”

The top five countries where new citizens in Moreton Bay have come from were New Zealand (106), United Kingdom (52), India (48), The Philippines (34) and Nepal (27).

Mayor Flannery encouraged the newly minted Aussies to explore the best the City had to offer.

“We are blessed to live in a city surrounded by natural beauty. Our creeks, hinterland and beaches are the envy of south-east Queensland and there is no shortage of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered,” he said.

“On the water, you can enjoy one of Australia’s largest estuarine bays in Moreton Bay Marine Park which is populated by a host of marine life including humpback whales, dugongs and turtles.

“And with art galleries, museums and a variety of interactive historical walks and bustling markets, Moreton Bay also offers a fascinating multicultural journey through time and creativity.

“There truly is something for everyone.”

City of Moreton Bay’s Australia Day Awards - Citizen of the Year and the Mayor's Community Spirit Award – will also be announced at the ceremony.
