Brendale-based business Kimini Constructions will reimagine the Albany Creek Community Centre, after winning a $500,000 renovation contract to give it a new lease on life.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was great to see Council’s new procurement policy helping more local companies get local work.

“Come Easter, we’ll be unveiling a new and improved Albany Creek Community Centre, with greater functionality, accessibility and appeal to encourage more people to use this new facility,” he said.

“This project is possible thanks to the State Government’s $210,000 contribution through their COVID Works for Queensland funding program, which is helping to accelerate projects across the region.

“This is a win for the local community and also a win for this local company.

“Since this policy came into effect in May, we’ve spent over $59 million across 620 local businesses in Moreton Bay, which is one of the best ways Council can boost our economy.

“We know that local businesses are more likely to hire subcontractors and employ locally within the region, and that’s going to be key to our post-pandemic recovery.

“Never has there been a more important time for Council to support local jobs for residents, which is why we’ve injected $37 million in COVID stimulus this year to help our local economy through the pandemic.”

Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd said the State Government’s $210,000 contribution was an investment into improving people’s day-to-day lives.

“Through the COVID Works for Queensland funding, we’re able to fast-track essential infrastructure upgrades, like the Albany Creek Community Centre, which is used and loved by many in the local community,” Ms Boyd said.

“This program is specifically designed to help Moreton Bay Regional Council get their communities back on their feet as quickly as possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

“While there’s no doubt Queenslanders are resilient, I know this project will create local jobs to support local families put dinner on the table each night.”

Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) said the upgrade would encourage more people to use and hire the centre.

We’re making some big changes to increase the hire-ability of the venue, including the installation of a kitchenette to allow multiple user cooking and preparation access,” Cr Tonks said.

“This project has been guided by feedback from residents, the centre managers and local community groups that have used the facility in the past, to give the tired, cramped centre a much-needed makeover.

“So, I couldn’t be more excited by this announcement, I’m proud to be part of a Council that acts on the concerns of its residents and I want to recognise the efforts of those who advocated for this upgrade.”

Construction will commence this month and be completed by April 2021, weather depending.
