Prepare your school

The Queensland Department of Education is an important pillar within the Moreton Bay community and for significant periods has responsibility for our most valuable and vulnerable resource - our children.

They have allocated significant resources to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and other stakeholders engaged within educational precincts.

Useful information on how the Department is organised and resourced to prepare and respond to disaster events can be found on the Department of Education website

Year 5 school presentation

City of Moreton Bay is committed to building resilience within our community, particularly through disaster preparedness education.

The Year 5 geography curriculum includes a unit on preparing, planning and responding to the different types of hazards and disasters that could potentially affect Queensland. To assist teachers and students with this important area of study, members of Council's Disaster Management team can deliver a complimentary one hour presentation to Year 5 students in schools across the region.

This presentation is interactive and empowering, with a strong focus on the role students can play in helping their families and community to plan and prepare for disasters. Part of the session involves students engaging in a picture card game, working in groups to select items for a household emergency kit, followed by a group discussion. To encourage further conversations and planning at home, students are given additional resources to share with their family.

School presentations can be organised through City of Moreton Bay's Disaster Management Team. Email DMResilienceandRecovery@moretonbay.qld.gov.au as early as possible to discuss your school's needs.

Additional teaching resources

The Moreton Bay Disaster Preparedness Course is specifically designed for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds whose language, literacy and numeracy capabilities prevent them from understanding existing disaster messaging. The course is developed for delivery in community and vocational settings in the Moreton Bay region and comprises of 10 lessons of one hour duration, supported by a teacher guide, lesson workbooks and information sheets. Please note, while this course is designed for CALD groups, it could also be used for adult literacy programs and possibly primary schools.

Council has also developed an online game which will enable everyone to better understand some appropriate actions to take when faced with severe weather events. Play the game and learn about natural disasters in the Moreton Bay region.
