Local uni students’ chance for a leg up in life

Disadvantaged school leavers now have a chance to afford a university degree thanks to Council’s $8,000 scholarship for University of the Sunshine Coast Moreton Bay campus students.

Mayor Peter Flannery said this scholarship could unearth the next Albert Einstein, so get your application in before November 30.

“Council doesn’t want finance to be a barrier to brilliance in the Moreton Bay Region,” he said.

“I firmly believe in giving equity to those who need it most so they can work to achieve their wildest dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow.

“This $8,000 scholarship is open to eight students attending USC in Semester 1 2022 who’ve left school within the past two years, and it takes the financial burden off their shoulders so they can focus on their studies.

“It’s already been a tough time for high school leavers who’ve had to endure some of the strangest schooling years in recent history during COVID-19, so this will make a huge difference to their lives.

“This sponsorship program has already helped sixteen students achieve their dreams of a undertaking a university degree since it was introduced in 2020.

“Attending university is often a first-in-family opportunity for these students, so this can change not only the lives of the young scholarship recipients but their families as well.

“The beauty of this program is that it provides support with funding annually across the full term of the students degree.

“As we’re now in the third year of the program, we’re seeing students who are nearing the completion of their chosen degrees.”

USC Vice-Chancellor and President Helen Bartlett praised Moreton Bay Regional Council for its strong commitment to supporting students across the region.

“For a student in financial need, a scholarship can make a huge difference to how much time they have available to study and to achieve their potential in terms of educational and career goals,” she said.

Applications for the Moreton Bay Regional Council Scholarship opened on 1 September, with applications to be submitted by 30 November 2021 for courses commencing in Semester 1 2022.

Students who have finished high school a maximum of two academic years prior to their chosen course commencing can apply.
