Youngs Crossing upgrade, Joyner

Last updated November 2025

Youngs Crossing Road closed due to flooding

Council is upgrading Youngs Crossing Road in Joyner. This work focuses on the section where the road crosses the North Pine River. It is one of the City’s largest road projects and an important part of the South East Queensland road network. The project spans more than one kilometre, from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road.

What will change

The roadworks will deliver major improvements to Youngs Crossing Road. They will make the road safer and more reliable during wet-weather events.

Key works include:

  • changing Youngs Crossing Road from two lanes to a two-lane divided carriageway
  • constructing a new bridge approximately 200 metres long. It will cross the North Pine River and Sideling Creek
  • constructing retaining walls and noise barrier fences
  • creating a new entry point into the Pine Rivers Pony Club complex
  • improving the culvert crossing at Sideling Creek
  • installing new signalised intersections at Protheroe Road and Thompson Bus Service intersections
  • upgrading the existing signalised intersection at Dayboro Road
  • installing active transport infrastructure for walking and cycling
  • constructing a lookout platform and pedestrian walkway. This will be on the western side of the new bridge
  • installing fauna refuge poles, rope canopy connections and rails to assist wildlife movement
  • installing koala exclusion fencing to restrict road access
  • extensive landscaping and tree planting.

Once complete, the existing Youngs Crossing will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists. It will link to Merv Ewart Reserve via a new path under the bridge.

How this benefits the community

The project will support expected growth in population, development, and traffic by delivering:

  • increased flood immunity
  • reliable access by preventing road closures and traffic diversions
  • reduced travel times and vehicle operating costs
  • increased road capacity and journey reliability
  • improved road safety and traffic management
  • enhanced connectivity
  • support for urban and economic growth
  • facilities that encourage more people to walk or cycle
  • safer crossing points for wildlife.

Project delivery and funding

Seymour Whyte is the project’s principal contractor. City of Moreton Bay is working in partnership with them to deliver this vital upgrade. The Australian Government has committed $51.6 million in funding. The Queensland Government will also provide $15 million.

What’s happening now

Construction activities for the project continue, including:

  • ongoing vegetation removal within the project boundary
  • continued installation of temporary fencing and access points
  • ground investigations and preparations for the bridge construction works that will span the waterhole
  • public access to the waterhole will not be available from Monday, 3 November 2025.

What to expect during construction

Throughout the project, there will be machinery, vehicles and active work on site.

Some work will need to occur at night for safety and to reduce traffic impacts on road users. We will inform residents if night work will affect them. Public access to Youngs Crossing Park and the waterhole will not be possible for safety reasons during the construction of the new bridge and road.

We will work to minimise traffic disruptions and inconvenience to nearby properties. All construction activities are subject to weather and construction conditions.

Traffic and road safety

To keep road users, pedestrians and workers safe, reduced speed zones will be in place. This includes a temporary 40 kilometre per hour limit along Youngs Crossing Road. Electronic message signs are positioned at various locations along the project corridor. They will be updated as work progresses.

Motorists and road users should follow signage and instructions. Delays may occur. Council appreciates your patience as we deliver this essential project.
