International Composting Awareness Week
Running from 4 to 10 May 2025, International Compost Awareness Week aims to improve awareness of the importance of compost and to promote compost use, knowledge and products.
This year's theme is 'Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost'. The theme highlights that when we're repurposing food that would go into landfill, we're creating fresh nutrients for the soil, which regenerates the earth and provides healthier food for everyone in the community.
Composting is an action everyone can take part in, no matter the size of your home or garden.

Award winners

First prize Monique King
"Speed up your rot - chop what you've got! Smaller scraps = faster compost"
|
|

|
Second prize Tracey Coe
"Chop it small to Compost Tall: The smaller the scraps, the faster the rot. Smaller bits have more surface area for microbes to break down, which speeds up decomposition and prevents bad smells!"

|
|
Third prize Varuni Samarawickrama
"For odour control - do not put in bones or meat. If the compost smells like ammonia, add carbon-rich elements such as straw, peat mass or dried leaves. Add more brown materials to absorb moisture."

Highly commended Jenny George
"Put a lot of thought into where to put your compost pile: not too hot or cold, with lots of drainage and not to close to your house or neighbours."
