Food safety supervisors

A food safety supervisor is someone with advanced food safety skills and knowledge. They have the ability to supervise the food safety operations of a food business on a daily basis. All licensable food businesses must have a food safety supervisor.

The food safety supervisor needs to be reasonably available while food is being handled. This means they must be either on-site or able to be contacted while the business is operating.

Food Safety Supervisors need to:

  • have skills and knowledge relating to food safety and hygiene
  • be able to identify, prevent and correct food safety hazards
  • be able to supervise other staff and give directions about food safety issues.

What training does a food safety supervisor need?

Food Safety Supervisors must have a certificate from a Registered Training Organisation. This applies to both category one and category two food businesses. The certificate must be renewed at least every 5 years. For details of the approved competency units, see the Food Safety Supervisors Guideline.

It is recommended that food safety supervisors for businesses not covered by categories one or two obtain certification. This certification shows that they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to be a food safety supervisor.

Notification of food safety supervisor

Food businesses must notify Council of the name and contact details of their food safety supervisor within 30 days after the licence is issued. If the food safety supervisor changes, Council must be notified within 14 days.

You can provide notification online via MBRC Online Services. You will be required to register an account in order to provide notification.
