Exhibition: Indigenous Australians at War - From the Boer War to the present

This award-winning travelling exhibition from the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne, celebrates the courage, tenacity and resourcefulness of Indigenous Australians in the armed forces, from the Boer War to the present.

Self-paced activity: Kit bags and letters home
Whiteside Free
Servicemen and women had to pack a kit bag for their area of service. Learn about standard and personal 'comfort' items that ANZACs took with them to war, and write your own 'letter home'.

Heritage Talk: I'll fight for white Australia! Queensland's Aborigines in the First World War

Rod Pratt, author of By cripes! I'll fight for white Australia! Queensland Aborigines in the first A.I.F. will discuss on a broad level how Queensland Aboriginals service fit into the current ANZAC myth.

Workshop: Friendship bracelets

Friendship bracelets are handmade and intended for a special person, and are often used as parting gifts. In this workshop we will explore various designs and techniques of knotting to create a gift and symbol of lasting friendship.

Thursday 21 September

Workshop: Make your own Diary

Army personnel who served during war time often wrote about their experiences. In this workshop we will investigate traditional methods of book binding to create our own diary.

Friday 22 September

Workshop: Wooden Memory Box
10.00am - 12.00noon Whiteside
Memory boxes contain objects that help us to reflect on the past and recall people and events. In this program we will build our own wooden box for special keepsakes.

Exhibition: Signs of the Times

We are surrounded by signs and symbols. Over time, symbols have gone in and out of fashion. Some have endured, others faded away, and new symbols have emerged.
