Title: Balancing Act, 2023

Artist statement

For this mural, I drew inspiration from what I love about living in and around Strathpine − the natural bushland areas and abundance of native wildlife nearby to where I live.  Our neighbourhood is made up of bush and eucalyptus trees, rivers and creek beds with communities threaded throughout. Over the past 20 years of living here I have seen many changes, including increased urban development and the construction of new houses. Like many locals, I am keen to ensure that natural habitats and wildlife corridors are preserved for native wildlife.

The title of my mural, Balancing Act, speaks to the importance of how we share our neighbourhoods with other creatures who live here too.  It is a delicate balance of environmental, economic, and social priorities that involves providing homes for people as well as protecting the precious habitat of our native wildlife.

Libraries are spaces for community connection, conversations, and learning and my mural aims to provide a space for reflection, to ask questions and have conversations; and a space for ideas and imagination.
