Title: Step Right Up!, 2023

Artist statement

The domestic environment has been a recurring theme in my artist practice, and I wanted to capture the quirkiness, vibrancy, and nostalgia of 1970s Caboolture with the bright bold retro colours of domestic interiors that this mural celebrates.

Step Right Up focuses on one lino tile, tilted to a diamond shape to create an illusion of depth of space that makes the tile appear to be hovering above the ground.  As people climb the stairs, they will experience the tile motif from different angles and when seen from a particular point the lines converge to form one diamond shaped tile.

Humour often plays a role in my work and by transforming an ordinary everyday object like lino flooring into an extraordinary staircase-sized motif space outside the home, that unites the downstairs car park and street frontage with the upstairs of the town square and its surrounding buildings, I hope to provide a journey of welcome, wonder and delight.
