Moreton Daily Stadium will host the NRL Telstra Women’s Premiership Grand Final in a move that will be worth $1 million to the local economy and bring 11,500 passionate rugby league fans to the region.

The Queensland Government, the NRL and Moreton Bay Regional Council today announced the history-making standalone match will be hosted in Redcliffe on April 10.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said there was great synergy between surging growth of women’s rugby league and Moreton Bay being one of the fastest growing Councils in Australia.

“I’m truly proud that Moreton Bay will help make women’s sporting history by hosting the first ever standalone NRLW Grand Final at Moreton Daily Stadium,” he said.

“These female athletes have shown for several years that they are a force to be reckoned with on a national level with their remarkable talent and passion for the game, so it’s only fitting that they now have their moment in the spotlight.

“And just like the NRLW, Moreton Bay is a growing force on the national stage as the third largest Council in Australia by population and the fifth fastest growing too.

“Council has invested $8.5 million into Moreton Daily Stadium so we can host elite events like this, and become home to the NRL’s 17th franchise The Dolphins in season 2023, which will be a huge economic boost for locals.

“I can’t wait to see thousands of fans, players and staff converging on our beautiful coastal destinations and our stunning hinterland retreats, so they can see what Moreton Bay has to offer.

“I’d like to thank the Queensland Government and the NRL for their partnership and for recognising the huge potential for Moreton Bay as a nation-leading Council.”

The NRL launched its expanded NRL Telstra Women's Premiership this morning, featuring three new teams and semi-finals for the first time.

NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said he was pleased that Queensland would host the 2021 NRLW Grand Final after hosting the men’s event.

“2021 will forever be remembered as the year the game relocated to Queensland and it’s fitting that the 2021 Telstra Women’s Premiership will be played in Queensland for the first time,” Mr Abdo said.

“I want to thank the Queensland Government and Moreton Bay Council for their ongoing support of rugby league.”

Member for Redcliffe and Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said Redcliffe’s NRLW Grand Final would deliver more than $1 million for Moreton Bay Region businesses.

“This history-making women’s Rugby League blockbuster gives the beautiful Redcliffe Peninsula the chance to shine in the national sporting spotlight,” Ms D’Ath said.

“Major events like the NRLW Grand Final bring visitors who support local jobs and the Moreton Bay Region’s tourism economy.

“The Palaszczuk Government has worked closely with the NRLW to secure the April 10 Grand Final because we know it will benefit Redcliffe accommodation providers and tourism operators, cafes and restaurants.

“Rugby League’s contribution to Redcliffe’s visitor economy will continue to grow in the months ahead with excitement building around the Dolphins’ 2023 NRL debut.”

Since the NRLW’s 2018 launch, the women’s decider has been played in Sydney immediately before the men’s first-grade premiership Grand Final.

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said League fans would be treated to two NRLW seasons in 2022.

“Redcliffe’s NRLW Grand Final adds another chapter to Rugby League’s record book after last year’s historic NRL finals series in regional Queensland and the Brisbane Grand Final,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Covid-19 postponed last year’s women’s Rugby League season, creating a second season in 2022 - the first from February 27, the second in September.

“We’ve turned the pandemic into football opportunity for Moreton Daily Stadium.

“The NRLW competition will boil over in 2022 with the Titans’ entry setting the scene for a Sunshine State rivalry with the Broncos, cheered on by Queenslanders in Rugby League’s heartland.”

An announcement will be made in the near future about ticket sales for the grand final, so please keep your eyes out for Council's Facebook page and website for more information.
