$8,000 Cash Scholarships Up For Grabs

Moreton Bay Regional Council has allocated $750,000 for equity scholarships that will help tear down the financial barriers holding back local kids from pursuing tertiary education.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said from September local Year 12 graduates will be able to apply for cash bursaries worth $8,000 each year if they choose to study at the new USC Petrie campus and come from families experiencing financial distress.

“Our region’s higher education rate is approximately half the national average,” he said.

“Statistics show students residing in areas of high disadvantage are significantly less likely to engage in tertiary education and complete Year 12 studies.

“We need to change that story for the Moreton Bay Region.

“I see next year’s opening of USC’s Petrie’s campus as the start of an exciting new chapter in our history, but for many local families the expense of tertiary study will remain an insurmountable barrier.

“Council’s equity scholarships will remove that obstacle for successful applicants.

“I believe it’s important to support our outstanding young locals and don’t want to see their talent or determination wasted because of financial barriers.

“We want to support locals to achieve their academic and career goals.

“I thank my fellow Councillors for their support of this initiative and their understanding of what a game-changer the university will be for our region’s kids and for our region’s economy more broadly.”

USC will administer all aspects of the MBRC Scholarship.
