Recent rain and humidity make perfect breeding conditions for mozzies, so Council’s Vector Team has been out checking across the region and targeting treatments to reduce the impact on residents.

Tuesday night’s storm hit several areas around the region hard, especially those south of Deception Bay who received significant rainfall, Mayor Peter Flannery said Council’s aerial mosquito treatment program will be activated on Friday (March 5) to target these areas from 7am.

“We have a helicopter contract independent of the other councils in South East Queensland, enabling us to respond immediately to storms and to help ensure the best outcomes for our community” he said.

“Unfortunately for the mozzies our team have already proactively mapped their breeding grounds, so we know where to hit them.

“Council’s mosquito aerial treatment program is the largest in South East Queensland, having already treated 25,489 hectares over nine treatments this season.

“That’s nearly 40,000 rugby league fields or one eighth of the entire Moreton Bay Region!

Treatment targets mosquito larvae before they have the chance to emerge into adults.  By targeting the mosquito larvae where they breed, these treatments reduce the number of mosquitoes that become adults.

Wear insect repellent if you’re heading outside at dawn and dusk as these are times when mosquitoes are most active.
