E-cigarettes and vapes

Vapes are hazardous waste items that contain a mixture of toxic chemicals, lithium-ion batteries, and single-use plastic. The battery contained in the vape poses a fire risk in collection trucks and Council waste facilities if not disposed of appropriately.

Due to safety hazards, e-cigarettes, vapes and batteries should not be put in your wheelie bins or public place litter bins. They should be disposed of at approved locations across Moreton Bay.

Single-use vapes

Single-use disposable vapes have the e-liquid or vape juice and the battery enclosed in a sealed unit. If the battery is unable to be removed easily or safely, then it is most likely a disposable vape.

Moreton Bay residents can dispose of their used, single-use vapes for free at participating Waste Management Facilities.

E-cigarettes, reusable or refillable vapes

There are three steps for best practice disposal of reusable vapes and e-cigarettes:

  1. Remove the battery and drop it off for recycling at collection points across Moreton Bay.
  2. Remove the cartridge, reusable pod, and e-liquid or vape juice. These components can be taken to a pharmacy to be disposed of through the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) Program. Call your pharmacy in advance to check if they will accept vape components. Do not put vape batteries in RUM Project collection bins as they are a fire risk.
  3. The outer container of the vape, with the battery and e-liquid removed, can be disposed of in the general waste bin.
