Needles and medical waste
Medical waste, including needles. syringes, and unwanted medicines, must be disposed of safely. Doing so helps safeguard people, animals, and the environment.
Never place loose needles, syringes, or sharps into your bins.
For advice on proper disposal, speak with your doctor, hospital, or pharmacist. If possible, drop sharps at a waste facility, If you must use your general waste bin, secure them in an approved sharps container and seal it.
Medical waste you can put in your general waste bin
Seal all medical waste in a heavy-duty plastic bag before placing it in your general waste bins.
Medical waste includes:
- dialysis bags
- soiled bandages and dressings
- disposable gloves
- less hazardous medical equipment that is contaminated with bodily fluids
- sealed sharps containers. However, the best option is to take sharps containers to a waste facility. You can also check with your local pharmacy for disposal options.
X-rays
Silver can be extracted from X-ray films for recycling, and the remaining residue used in materials for road construction. Our major waste facilities accept X-rays.

Free sharps containers are available at Council's major waste facilities. You can ask for a container at the weighbridge.
