Council is renewing the foreshore protection seawall at Charlish Park on Redcliffe Parade, south of the Redcliffe Jetty.
The renewal works will include:
- the replacement and upgrade of approximately 90 metres of reinforced concrete seawall
- an extension of the sloped rock armour seawall
- improvements to the shared pedestrian and cycle path.
About the new seawall and footpath
The new concrete footpath provides improved and safer pedestrian access. The design minimises intrusion into the Moreton Bay Marine Park.
The new seawall will be a sloped rock armour revetment extending further seaward. It will be backed by a reinforced concrete low crest wall and footpath.
Impacts to residents and visitors
Construction is expected to start in mid-2024 and be completed by mid-2025. There may be limited public access or use of the area during this time.
Construction will occur between 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays. Some work will be scheduled for low tide periods.
All work will adhere to the environmental approval conditions. These conditions aim to avoid disruption to surrounding areas and the public by limiting:
- noise
- vibration
- dust
- odour and debris; and
- managing heavy traffic on Redcliffe Parade.
Benefits of the new seawall
Improvements were made in 2017 to place rock armour at the southern end of the structure. This assisted in reducing scour.
The seawall, originally built in the 1950s, is deteriorating from exposure to harsh marine conditions and age.
The new seawall has been designed to last for 100 years. It can be modified in the future to withstand projected sea-level rise.
It has the added benefit of protecting against the erosion of our marine and coastal environment. As well as protecting against wave overtopping and improving public amenity and safety.
The project forms part of Council’s long-term coastal protection seawall renewal program.
