Food safety training

Food businesses are required to ensure that staff who handle food have skills and knowledge in how to handle the food safely. Before carrying out food handling activities, employees must either:

  • complete a food safety training course; or
  • be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge of food safety and hygiene appropriate to their work activities.

Food safety training courses must include training in:

  • safe handling of food; and
  • food contamination; and
  • cleaning and sanitising of food premises and equipment; and
  • personal hygiene.

The following food safety training courses meet these requirements and are available at no cost:

This training is not suitable for a food safety supervisor who must complete the relevant competencies with a Registered Training Organisation. For more information, refer to food safety supervisors.

Upon completion, food handlers will receive a certificate which can be provided as evidence of meeting the food handler training requirements.
