Active School Travel Program

Helping families move smarter, safer, and healthier every day!
City of Moreton Bay’s Active School Travel Program supports schools, families, and communities to reduce school traffic congestion. It encourages active travel choices such as walking, cycling, scooting, or using public transport to get to school.
The program is part of our broader Accessible Schools Program, which includes infrastructure upgrades, road safety improvements, and educational initiatives. It’s all about making the journey to and from school easier, greener, and more fun for everyone!
Benefits of active travel for students and the community
Active travel increases physical activity, improving the health and wellbeing of students and their families or carers. It also reduces traffic congestion around schools, lowering the risk of accidents and vehicle emissions. The benefits don’t stop there!
- Often quicker than travelling by car.
- Boosts academic performance.
- Free or low-cost, saving you from car expenses.
- Great for the environment.
- Fosters stronger community connections.
- Builds independence and confidence.
How the Active Travel Program works
Council works directly with schools to deliver a range of fun initiatives. These aim to promote active, safe, and sustainable travel, and include:
- school-based activities, challenges and rewards
- education on walking, riding, scooting, skating or taking public transport to school
- support to create safe travel routes and routines
- feedback collection to improve infrastructure.
Each school that joins the program gets tailored support and resources to drive long-term change in travel habits.
Join the active travel movement
Parents and caregivers play a key role in supporting and promoting active travel within their school communities. Here are some simple ways you can get involved:
- Complete a travel survey provided by your school to help Council improve access and safety.
- Choose active options for school pick-up and drop-off when possible. Even parking 5 minutes away and walking can help.
- Nominate weekly active travel days.
- Talk to your children about walking or riding to school and why it’s important.
- Travel together or form a walking group with other families to boost safety in numbers.
- Join your school’s Active Travel committee to help shape the program locally.
Council's role in safer school travel
Through the Active School Travel Program, Council delivers real on-the-ground improvements. This includes:
- safer pedestrian crossings
- new footpaths and direct walking routes
- better bus stop in partnership with TransLink
- road signage and speed calming near schools
- shaded and weather-protected pathways
- designated Park and Walk zones within a 5-minute walk to schools.
These upgrades are delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government, Department of Education, and local schools. By working together, we are creating safer school precincts. This ensures more accessible and safe routes to school for students and families.
Resources and support for school leaders
School principals and leadership teams are vital champions for active school travel. By partnering with City of Moreton Bay, your school gains:
- program materials and student resources
- event planning support and promotional tools
- infrastructure and safety audits, where applicable
- parent engagement materials
- recognition for participation and achievements.
