Footy Finals Fever Hits Moreton Bay Region

Published 19 September 2019

While Moreton Bay Region is still mourning the Dolphins’ 20-16 loss to the Seagulls at the weekend, Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council Allan Sutherland said there is a silver lining for local business.

“Whatever happens now, two teams from outside the region from either Townsville, Wynnum, Burleigh or Sunshine Coast will be travelling with their entourages when footy finals hits fever-pitch later this month,” he said.

“It’s the sugar coating on a bitter pill.

“Two teams travelling to our region means twice the accommodation bookings, twice the meals and twice the amount of business come the finals showdown on September 29.

“I’m sad we won’t get to see the boys in red and white in the grand final on home soil this year, but Dolphin Stadium will host the Intrust Super Cup grand final again in 2020 and 2021.

“Like the epic atmosphere of the Broncos and Cowboys grand final in Sydney in 2015 - both sides will travel to Redcliffe with a large and passionate fan base desperate to take the cup home.

“No matter who’s on the field, the refurbished Dolphin Stadium is the perfect place to host the Intrust Super Cup grand final - our stadium gets you so close to the action you’re practically on the field with the players.

“There aren’t many communities in Queensland more enthusiastic about rugby league than the fanatics here in Moreton Bay Region and with five games being played on grand final day across junior, youth and senior levels, I’d suggest you start looking at accommodation now, you don’t want to risk missing out.

“With capacity for 10,000 spectators including two grandstands and seating for more than 8,000 people, there’s no reason why the Intrust Super Cup Grand Final crowd at Dolphin Stadium couldn’t top last year’s Suncorp Stadium grand final crowd of 7,504. Let’s do this!”

QRL Chief Operating Officer Rohan Sawyer said the stadium’s modern facilities, combined with the “community feel” of the Moreton Bay Region, made it the ideal place to host the September 29 blockbuster.

“Dolphin Stadium is a boutique rugby league ground with a world-class playing surface and facilities,” Sawyer said.

“We undertook an extensive ‘expression of interest’ process; and our clubs were all strongly in favour of the move.

“Our team is really looking forward to working with Redcliffe and the local community to put on a great day for everyone involved in our statewide competitions.

“The game-day program represents great value for money with family passes available for as little as $40.

“With the quality of talent on display and with so much on the line in each game, we expect tickets to sell fast and the full-house sign to go up.

“This would generate a superb atmosphere, as Dolphin Stadium is a purpose-built rugby league venue that is perfectly suited to hosting an event like this.”

The QRL has committed to a three-year term to play the grand final at Dolphin Stadium.
