Public safety cameras (CCTV)

Council operates an extensive network of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in a range of public places and buildings throughout the city. The cameras help to create a safer environment and reduce crime levels by deterring potential offenders and helping in crime detection.

How to request CCTV footage

An application for access to CCTV footage can be made under the Right to Information Act 2009. See Right to information for details on how to make an application.

Law enforcement

Law enforcement agencies can submit a request for closed circuit television footage.

Storage of footage

All footage is generally retained for a period of 45 days, before it is electronically overwritten. Footage may be kept for less than 45 days during system upgrades, repairs or maintenance.

CCTV and your privacy

Council employs specially trained staff to manage the CCTV network and control access to footage. All recordings are treated as confidential. Access is only provided to authorised persons. The collection and storage, use and disclosure of personal information is subject to the privacy obligations in the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD).
