Local Laws Review Update: Swimming, Waterways and Cemeteries

After a comprehensive review of Council’s Local Laws and public consultation in 2021 asking how you think we can better regulate our growing region, the first three draft laws are going out for public consultation.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the first three cabs off the rank are the Local Laws for Bathing Reserves, Maintenance of Works in Waterway Areas, and Cemeteries.
“These proposed laws were drafted to reflect the feedback we received through community consultation earlier in the year,” he said.
“Thanks to thousands of submissions from our community, Council is ready to progressively release 13 proposed laws over four phases.
“The proposed Bathing Reserves Local Law regulates our patrolled beaches, including behaviour between the red and yellow flags. This is important so that everyone can enjoy our beautiful beaches in a safe and social manner.
“The proposed Maintenance of Works in Waterway Areas law will provide a tailored response to the current needs and interests of the Moreton Bay community regarding the regulation works in waterway areas, including canal revetment walls and seawalls.
“The proposed Cemeteries Local Law will streamline how Council regulates and operates cemeteries into a consolidated independent local law.”
Consultation for phase one is open from 1 November to 21 November 2022.

Mayor Flannery said Local Laws play a major part in our everyday lives by setting community standards and improving the liveability for all residents.
“They regulate a wide range of matters from backyard firepits, animal-keeping and parking to advertising signs, festivals and events, and many more,” he said.
“Council regularly reviews these laws to make sure they reflect community expectation, and this is especially important as our region grows and changes.
“There will be an opportunity for the community to comment on each of the proposed laws as we progressively release them for review.
“Whether you support or object to the proposed Local Laws, we want to hear from you.”
