Hands on Life by Bruce Ellem

Artist statement

Bruce Ellem is a sensitive artist who creates colourful and inspirational artworks. Born in 1953 with Down syndrome, Bruce's work is made up of a myriad of shapes and patterns, reflecting lifeforms in his own very unique and distinctive style. Bruce communicates his world through his dynamic and creative artworks with a vision that transcends the norm. He has created, through the symbols he draws, a naïve yet profound language of his own. Bruce is a local Samford artist, and his work is well-loved by the local community.

His vinyl mural brings together many parts of Bruce’s imagination and world history that he explores through his art practice. The 8-piece formation sprawls playfully across the footpath, starting with a large dinosaur. At the other end, where there are parties, meetings and gatherings, Bruce’s hands press into the ground purposefully from the perspective of the picnic tables. The hands celebrate the human connection sought and made in the park.

Bruce’s artwork is playful and fun, sharing with the viewer the joy of how he sees the world around him. In his artwork, he incorporates natural elements found around Samford, like the mountain range and freshwater turtles. His drawings evoke social connection, with the universal language of hands, with the composition open to interpretation - are they framing nature, protecting it, or nurturing it?

This temporary ground mural encourages play and joy by reflecting the world around us in rainbows.
