What are soft plastics?
Soft plastics are lightweight, flexible plastics that can't go in your household recycling bin. Common examples include:
- bread bags
- frozen food bags
- biscuit and snack wrappers
- pasta packets
- bubble wrap
- postal satchels
- personal care and household product packaging.
Avoiding soft plastics is best
The best way to reduce soft plastic waste is to avoid it where possible.
- Choose products with less packaging.
- Buy in bulk when practical.
- Use reusable shopping and produce bags.
- Reuse soft plastic packaging where you can.
How to recycle soft plastics
If you can't avoid soft plastics, many items can be recycled through participating supermarket collection points as part of the Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia (SPSA) program.

- Scrunch it: If it passes the scrunch test, it's likely a soft plastic.
- Check it: Not all soft plastics are accepted. Learn more about the SPSA accepted items
- Drop it off: Find your nearest participating collection point
If the item isn't accepted through the program, place it in your general waste bin.
What happens next?
Soft plastics collected through the SPSA program are processed into new products such as:
- food-grade packaging
- building materials
- garbage bags
- fence posts
- road and infrastructure materials.
